I don't know but I have been told that the stripe are eating all of the crappie and bream and many bass.

Does anyone know if this is a fact?

Although these species are not the stripes main food source, they will eat all three species. I had a stripe eat a crappie that I had hooked and broke the line on my crappie pole immediatly. Ha, the 35 pound stripe caught in my boat last Sunday had a 10 inch spot in its stomach.

I've heard of stripe feeding on spot bass up to 2Lb. in the pace point boat landing area.

This is a ludacris question and the cause of many beliefs about striped bass that are not true. I have personally done surveys and research with biologists from alabama power on the tallapoosa river all the way from montgomery to the shoals in lake martin only to conclude that gizzard shad make up over ninety percent of a stripers diet period. It is true that stripers are a preditory fish and they do eat crappie, bass, bream, crawfish, etc. but let me say again that their main diet consist of shad. At different times of the year their diet shifts from gizzard shad to threadfin shad due to water tempature and metabolic rates but they bare no influence on the population of the other game fish in lake martin of any other lake in the state for that matter. It is important that these rumors are cleared up and people understand that the main reason that stripers are stocked in lake martin is to control the shad population. Without stripers in these waters the baitfish population would be all out of whack and the overall populations would suffer as well.

Your question is such a stupid statement that I am so tired of hearing that yes my spelling was off and I did mean ludicrous.

Thanks for the info. Did not know they were brought in for shad control. I imagine anything hungry enough will eat just about whatever they can.

Don't get pi$$ed at me for asking a question. I don't know what fish eat and don't really care. Ran into this old dude(that I thought was crazy or drunk) who was complaining that the stripe ate all of the crappie and he couldn't catch them like he did 50 years ago.

All I know about fish is that according to W.C.Fields you can't drink water because fish f in it.

Kizz.. no one is PO'ed. have heard it for years and some of my fellow striper fans get upset.. As for the crappie, have been off a bit so far this fall, but believe me, caught a tote bag last weekend despite the wx and they were big.. Stripers missed a good bunch of them obviously..

I know this is an old thread but it is an ongoing sore spot among the crappie fishermen. I did my own survey of striper stomach contents in 2002. I kept 41 stripe over the coarse of the year and sampled the stomach contents of ALL of them. I was both shocked and amazed not to have found a single crappie in the stomach. The vast majority of stomach contents were shad, followed by bream, suckers, and even a couple of crawfish.
I remember the days of crappie fishing with my grandfather and boating a 100 a day during the spring. That type of fishing pressure along with the people that continued to keep non spawning size crappie until the 9 inch minimum was imposed contributed to fewer crappie. These are just my humble opinions though.

  Happy Fishing
