GREAT!

I stopped in Monday to say hello to John and had a great conversation re: stripe bait and fishing spots. Went back Tuesday to let John know I wouldn't be getting bait since I didn't really have time to go looking for the fish. He wasn't there but his wife was and she was talking to him. She handed me the phone and John told me where to try. I got some bait (not sure to give out details since John may get in dutch with some local "guides") and took off to fish. Kyle bent over backwards to make sure I got what I needed and helped me some with how to fish. Please stock 5/0 circle hooks and better bait buckets. Kiddin about the buckets but I did have a handle issue in the boat about 7 inches from the live well. Tell Kyle it wasn't your knots! The shad (did I say that out loud?)made it all afternoon.

I think I saw John out there with his group.

I went up river past the train tressle and trolled black salties and shad on planer boards. Got bit 3 times and 3 or 4 follows on the humminbird but didn't catch a fish. That's fishing!

I say all of this to get to this point.

I'm a pretty good fishirman - I have a boat, a place on the lake, rods and reels out the wazoo and can get shad to fish with BUT...without knowing everything there is to know about stripe and having a lot of practice, the fact that I can get shad isn't going to hurt the guide business on lake martin. I went out with Wes in February for a lesson and learned tons but still missed 3 fish and didn't get the others to hit.

Anyway, that was all pretty convaluted but what I'm saying is stripe fishing is too hard for guides to worry about what bait us little guys can buy. Give us a break and understand most of us wouldn't be able to hire a guide anyway and the bait sure as heck doesn't give us unfair advantage. I'm going to try to get red horse suckers anyway!

How many locals (people with lake houses and boats) hire guides? I would think it would be mostly to learn how and then do it on their own. I bet there is enough business coming from B'ham, Montgomery and (I hate to write this!) Atlanta to keep everyone busy.

By the way...When I got back to the house John had left me a message telling me he might have another suggestion for a place to find fish. What more could you ask for from a fishing buddy and bait shop.

John, I'll see you Saturday for some bait and vegetables. May be eating grilled stripe and veggies Sat nite and I hope I haven't stirred up a hornets nest!

I'm with you buddy. Just want to catch a few to dip in the peanut oil. Nice to have someone around for a little 'guide'ance. I hired a guide and had a great time and learned a bit. Need to haul in some on my own now.
Good luck.

That's why a real guide is an expert, and well worth their prices. They invest tons of time, money, days we wouldn't be on the lake, equipment, etc to ply their craft.
I'd rate myself well above average fisherman, yet I know full well compared to our guides we have in the forums, I am but a novice. I've hired guides on numerous trips to other areas. Always found it pleasurable and worth every penny.

Especially when guests come to town, I leave the fishing to the experts and let my guests enjoy catching fish with the guides, instead of me fumbling around trying to keep everyone;s line wet.

I am just as impressed with their pole side manner and patience with beginners.

THanks y'all!
