OK, let's say I've got 5/0 circle hooks, can get good baits, have rods and reels to handle the fish...What else do I need? I've read about jigs and planer boards (i have a couple) and freelining but don't have any spoons or jigs. What do I need to get and - John, use this as a shopping and stocking list for the store!
Also, what abotu all the different ways to fish for stripe? drift with baits @ around 30 ft., dead drift with baits around 5 ft.,?
Help a brutha out!

I do not fish with circle hooks unless I am taking a beginner fishing. I fish with 5/0 and 4/0 Octopus hooks from Gamakatsu. If you are fishing with small shad I use the smaller hook so they can swim better. You need 1 oz or heavier weights with swivels on both ends. I fish with 17 Pound big game line or 15 pound flourocarbon if the water is clear which it usually is. You will need Big topwater baits like musky snax or Red fins to cast and swim across the top creating a wake in the spring time. I never fish with bucktails but they are good in the winter and early spring. I do not fish that time of year. I use balloons on one of my free lines straight out the back and planers on two freelines out the side. When a fish hits the freeline it is important to reel up the slack before you try and set the hook. I do this by pointing the rod at the fish and cranking the reel until you feel pressure and then set the hook. If not you will end up in the bottom of the boat ha. If you are going to use downlines for stripe the most important piece of equipment is a really good fish finder. If it costs less than a thousand dollars it is not good enough in my opinion. When downlining for stripes you need to put the shad a couple of feet above the stripe that you see on the fish finder. Right now I am catching the fish between 16 and 24 feet down. I usually put two rods down up front in the boat with me and put one at 16 and one at 20 and adjust as I draw the stripe on the fish finder. When freelining for them you just have to hit them with the bait because it is usually too shallow to draw them on the fish finder. In the spring time if it is overcast I am constantly casting a big red fin while I am fishing. If you are fishing downlines go at a slow speed so the line stays straight down and do not swing back. If you are freeling you can put the trolling motor on about 75% and go. Hope this helps a little, if you still have a question ask.

OK. So you troll freeline with planers and balloons in the middle. You use 2 oz weight on dropline about 2 or 3 ft above marked fish. I don't know what a redfin is but I'll find one. What about a topdog jr? what about large jigs? people have mentioned using large jigs. How large and when. have you ever used any soft plastic swim baits? the 5 or 6 inch paddle tails? Do they need weights? Is trolling them worthwhile? I am going to ask the questions while you're willing to answer!!! Is it legal to fish with bream?

It is legal to fish with Bream. You can also use black salties. You can get them at Fish Tales bait and tackle in Alex City just past the Ford dealership. Red fins are large top-water plugs. You can get them at Walmart or Academy. Get the biggest one you can find. 8 to 10 inches. I use bucktails with good success. I don't know why the the other guy doesn't use them. Live bait, bucktails and Redfins are all you need for stripers. Waterbugz planer boards work great. We caught a 40 pounder last year using them.

The only time I used bucktails, was if I casted in to schooling fish, but I usually cast a red fin or a excalibur (now hedon) spitin image into the schooling fish. I just never fish with bucktails, just a personal thing from not fishing them growing up. I should probably start. I only planer board live bait and I would only use water bugs planers cause I have had problems with the kind that bass pro sells. dont know what they are called. If you use bream for bait it is illegal to catch them in a throw net and keep them. They must be caught on a hook, so if you have bream in a tank make sure there are hook marks in their mouth or you could get a ticket that is not cheap. When downlining use about a 3 foot leader below the weight. The cheapest rod and reel setup that works great is a 7 foot Ugly stick with an abu garcia 6500 with a clicker. always keep the button mashed on the reel while fishing to keep from loosing a rod or having the line break when the stripe hits. Again if the water is real clear lighter line is a must so the fish cant see it. I have caught stripe up to 45 pounds on 15 pound big game line with no problem as long as the drag is set so they can run. makes for a great ten minute fight also. Do not pump the rod just hold constant pressure on the fish and reel when you can and the line will do fine. If you ever notice a rough spot in the line re-tie. I re- tie after every fish to be safe.

Ive never seen a top dog jr. If it is larger than 7 inches, shad colored, and fished with a slow retrieve so the bait wobbles across the top making a wake then it will work. Im not the person to answer questions about jigs. I only fish live bait and top water for stripes mainly out of habit and I only fish for stripes from March through the summer due to hunting season.

Last weekend I caught 2 small stripes trolling about 3.5mph with Downriggers I caught 1 on a Spoon and the other on a Horse head bucktail jig with a curly tail. The color on the Jig was blue and white with a small siver spoon on the head. these are the first stripes I have caught. I have learned alot from folks here on the web site and from a trip I took with Stipernut57.
Good luck I am going to try it again this weekend. If you see a bow rider with a ski tower and rocket launchers on hollar at me.
