Subject:   Problems with shad in my tank

The shad in my Holding tank at my house are growing some kind of fungus on and around their eyes. It only happens after they have been in there for at least a week and it is not killing the shad but I dont like it. I am using novaqua, stress coat, fish protector, baitsaver and salt in their water. The tank is filtered with a tetra pond barrel filter that is rated for 2000 gallons and my tank is 150 gallons. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How often do you do water changes? Did you have any other species in your tank.

It sounds like you have to many chemicals in the tank. All you need is a good bio-filter and they should do fine. When you start putting a bunch of different chemicals in the tank when you have a biological filter in can kill the good bacteria in the tank. It sounds like they are rubbing off there slime coat and bacteria is growing around there eyes.

Too many chemicals in my opinion. Novaqua is your best bet in your holding tank at 1oz per 60 gallons. Salt should be added at 1 cup per 10 gallons. The fish protector is a better chemical for the hauling or catching process when the shad are more likely to knock their scales off. I'm not too sure about the baitsaver as I've never used it but is probably not necessary in the holding tank either. Try to keep ammonia levels down in the water by doing more frequent water changes and keeping your filter clean to avoid other funguses that can occur like tail rot and ammonia based funguses.

John an I use Stress Coat and Better Bait at the labeled rates + salt at 1 lb/30 gallons and don't have problems.
