on pontoon this spring. I store my boat under a shelter with the cover on during the off season, but does not seem to help.

Have reviewed suggestions for cleaning on this forum, but have another question. Does anyone know of a way to prevent mildew from forming on boat seats, such as a a coating of some kind?

Clean (Going to try MaryKate Mildew Remover, this year) and protect (Use Aerospace 303 Protectant)the seats before Winter Storage.

Let the interior of the boat air dry completely before covering and storing and take all wet / damp gear out of the toon for the winter. I actually take all the gear out whether wet or dry.

Raise all seat to allow for adequate airflow.

Then I place two plastic containers (each with 5 pounds of charcoal in the mid back and front of the boat with holes (from what I hear helps control the humidity). Might try humidity control packs this year.

Then I leave all my gates open to allow adequate airflow with the cover on the boat.

After all this you need to keep the interior of the boat dry throughout the winter months.

You need to allow air to circulate under the cover. Moisture in the air and no air circulation will lead to mildew. This often happens in boats with cabins
which can become musty after an extended period closed without air. Newer vinyl has an inhibiter to prevent or slow down the growth of the fungus spores. Hopefully, someone will post a product to prevent it.

I avoided it by storing the pontoon inside at Harbor Pointe Marina for the 4 years that I owned it and never had any mildew. I laid the cover over the seats just to keep them clean while in storage.

Will be doing the same as " Maverick ", except will build lightweight screens to fit snug on the outside of gate openings (to keep varmints out). To stabalize, will mount legs on the inside of screen frame. The screen cover will be landscaping fabric. Might work, might not. Have to see.

I think the key here is constant air flow and I am thinking of purchasing a couple of solar powered fans.

See the URL below some great advice:

The problem with mildew is it needs moisture and a confined space to grow. Most boat covers from the factory are too tight, There has to be enough air flow to keep the mildew from growing. As marine vinyls age, they loose there clear coat (usually around the 3-4 year mark). So the info on Mary Kate and 303 is dead on. Not only does the mildew grow on the seats, but also gets into the foam, floors, and carpeting. As summer winds down, and football heats up, we forget to properly store our boat for the next year. The end of season prep is very important. Get it clean, then put a SUPER coat of 303 on ,then loosely cover with plenty of air flow through out the boat. Don't forget to remove all life vest and leave the seat bottoms up. Check to see if everything is going well during the winter and your boat should look as good as when you put it up. Be sure to use your total boat mooring cover, and make sure that it fits properly. If you need any help with it look at the coach kraft upholstery site on this website.
