My tachometer is reading erratically under high RPMs. I have replaced the rectifier and wire harness from engine to control box and from control box to the tach. replaced the tach 3 times. Neither helped. Anyone have a suggestion as to what I should check next.

Make, model and year might help?

The engine is a 1983 Mariner 75HP 4 cyl. on a 1993 Crest pontoon boat.

Tell me how you have wired in.

Have you checked the setting on the back of the indicator?

First off you are using an outboard tach? If it has a setting switch on the back of the tach it should be set to 12P for the 75 HP Mariner. Also, you should have red wire to + and black wire to - on the back of the tach. The gray wire should be to the signal on the back of the tach. This wire comes from the rectifier. If all above is correct disconnect the gray wire and using a volt/ohm meter measure the voltage on the gray wire with the engine running and come back and let us know.

Thanks for all the help offers. I had it wired right, the tach was bad. Replaced with a new one and it is now reading properly. Again let me say thank you.

In your original post, you said you replaced the tach 3 times previously to no avail. Let me know how long this one last. Just curious.

The replaced tachs were Teleflex Marine Eclipse Series from Bass Pro Shop. The one that works is a Farina for Mecury/Mariner out board motors. I did add a ground from the Tach to the Battery but it did not help with the Teleflex ones. I did not bother to remove it when the Farina tach worked properly. I decided if "it ain't broke don't fix it".
