I was wondering if anyone on this forum knew an older man with a boat called the BeBe Rae. I know he is a regular striper fisherman since this is about the third or forth time i have seen him. the reason i ask is i was fishing this morning and this man drove within about 35 yards of my boat going about 25 mph. not only did i find this disrespectful but it doesnt help the fishing. then he fished on top of some other boaters in the area. He has also fished on top of me once before. anyway im not writing this to start a commotion but i would like to see a change in this behavior as this is the first problem on lake martin i have run in to. thank you if you can help.

I am glad you posted this. Last year I was downlining and he proceeded to troll dirctly toward me. When he got within 30 yards, he turned left and made a "C" around me staying 30yards away). I still can't believe his downrigger lines did not catch my downlines. As he proceeded around me, he had the nerve to ask if I had seen any schooling stripers. He is the only striper fisherman that has ever been that close to me. As a guide, you think he would respect others. I know that Jim P would never do that.
To that end too, I am always amazed at the armada that follows Jim P. I don't know how he stands it.

It used to be that only a select group of guys were fishing a lot on the lake and when we did we often worked together getting fairly close to each other however our first priority was to be courteous to each other. I hate to see this happening since now there are shad being sold and a lot more people have the chance to go do it themselves and I don't want them to think this is acceptable behavior. I am writing this post even though I do not fish the lake anymore during the summer to hope that people will see what has happened and learn that it is a BIG lake and it does not take much to make a striper fisherman happy but this is one of the things that will frustrate the living hell out of you when it happens.

There are certain spots that produce fish and when you make a run to those spots and someone is already fishing there what do you do, especially if you slow down and start marking schools of bait and fish. I personally fish it even if someone is there. I don't mind at all when the guides come up and fish on top of me. That just tells me that I am in the right spot. I don't own the lake so other people can do what they want and I will do what I want.

It is becoming a problem as the so-called "guides" try to find the fish by honing in on someone elses skills or knowledge. It is definitely irritating having someone crowd you while fishing. Personally I am to outspoken to let it be, I'll have to say something and hopefully he will get the picture. We all have to respect one anothers space, as generally we are fishing to have a good time and catch some fish. I'm sure I'll see W.W. and I'll have a word with him. Until then, good luck!

I always respect another fisherman's area and the direction he's trolling towards, be it stripe fishing or bass fishing. And I expect the same respect in return.

The answer is you make a run to another spot or you wait until that person leaves the spot. I agree that no one owns the lake or spots on the lake but it is common fishing courtesy to not move in on someone fishing an area. If all you know is one spot, then you should try to learn others. Many of us have spent a lot of time learning the moving patterns of the stripes and to have someone pull up next to you really stinks. Much less to have someone pulling downriggers (which I personally think spook the bigger fish) bring them right by your downlines, really irritates me. I am normally a calm person but I was wishing I had a 1 oz bucktail tied on that I could have hurled at the boat (and yes, I know that would have been wrong, but it was going through my head).
All I am asking for is a little courtesy and if you see someone fishing the spot that you arrived at late, either come back later that day or wake up earlier the next morning.

I have had many people fish on top of me as well, but it never bothered me. However, that does not relinquish me from my responsibility for courtesy towards others. Again, I apologize if I have fished too close to anybody on this forum in the past. I get the message, and I have plenty of spots marked on the Lowrance to check without pulling up on one with a stripe fisherman in the area. I did not realize it was a problem, but now I do and it won't happen again.

Dumb question.... But what is too close if you are trolling or drifting down lines how far away from other fisherman is considered O.K. If a guy is fishing the humps does he have rights to all the humps in area or just the one he is over. Nutin

This of course is dependant on everyone, especially if you are the one there first or the one coming in, but my opinion is, if someone is fishing a point (especially a small one) or a hump, he/she should be left alone on the point. If the person is fishing a flat, a series of humps or a really long point, multiple boats can fish together. However, in no circumstance should you come within or close to casting distance. Now I mostly use live bait and rarely troll anymore so my views are based on if soemone is downlining or freelining bait. A bunch of trollers can criss cross as far as I am concerned if they stay away from "still fishers". Once again, my opinion.
Where I get annoyed is when trollers (and I do not mean this in a derogatory manner) come across a point, hump, or ledge that I am fishing, then they snag the bottom and circle around to get their baits, and even one case their cannon balls. Plus I think the downrigger wires send out a harmonic that spooks fish as I have had times where I was marking/catching the fool out of fish and a troller came by and all of the fish diappeared as he was even with me. Heck, maybe the fish chased his lures as far as I know.
I just ask that judgement and respect are used. We are all out there for fun.

My problem is that I wonder if the striper fisherman sees me when he is coming in a straight line towards my boat. Sometimes looking at the scope gets a little mesmerizing, and it doesn't take long to be on top of someone, even trolling.

I usually don't post on the forum, but my intentions today was to get BeBe Rae phone number off his web site so I could really chew his out the next time he came across my bow when I am trolling with down rod. I have had several fisherman stop by my house and tell of his poor Lake etiquette. Last Sunday 05/31/09. He had a Man a Women and a small boy about 10 years old in the boat with him when he crossed by bow. Lake Martin is over 40,000 acres and if some one is on a hump, spot or school of fish they should be respected. I let it go from here. I am sure other people are having the same problem so I won’t run it into the ground.
