Any tips on skiing behind a PWC? "Buy a ski boat" hopefully won't be the answers I get. My question is, my PWC is good on top end but no good for low end torque and I'm assuming that is they way most are except maybe the really big boys. Would a stretchy type rope help so that the PWC could get a running go and not yank my arms out of socket? It is better starting off from the dock (me not the PWC) but still not enough without a BIG struggle.

I believe you are required to have a spotter on board a PWC to be legal when towing. Might complicate your start up.

As long as you have the required mirrors on the PWC a spotter is not required.

On pulling up a skier behind a PWC as long as they know how to ski and are on 2 skis should not be an issue on getting the skier up, even if a heavy person. Now with regards to trying to pull up a person on slalom skis that is a totally different story, as the person might swallow the entire lake before you get them up, if they are over say 125 lbs or so. The hard part is maintaining a constant speed.

Operating a vessel towing a person or persons on water skis, or an aquaplane or similar device unless there is in the vessel a person, in addition to the operator who is at least 12 years of age and is observing and is capable of communicating to the operator the progress of the person being towed or unless the vessel is equipped with a wide- angle mirror with a viewing surface of at least 500 sq. centimeters (78 square inches) and a field of vision of at least a 170 degrees.

Taken straight from the rule book, boat or PWC.
I don't think I've seen mirrors on any PWC that meet these requirements. I've been told Alabama pwc towing rules state there must be a watcher.

Appreciate all the dialogue (always good to keep the forum up and going) but its not an issue of vision- I am legal with my mirrors. And I do know how to ski and I am on two skis. I have strong arms and it is all I can do to get up- swallowing the entire lake until the PWC gets in its sweet spot for speed. Once I'm up- no problem. Its not that I can't- I just don't know many people who would be as dedicated as I am to get up on skis.

What ever you do, don't start off from your dock!

The Rule states :

A capable observer, other than the operator, 12 years of age or older OR:

BOATS --- A wide-angle rearview mirror. The size of the mirror must be at least 78 sq. inches and have a field of vision of at least 170 degrees.

PWC ---- Every PWC towing a person(s) on water skis or a similar device must have mirrors mounted on both the right and left sides of the PWC (but not attached to the steering control) and the mirrors must be at least 2.5 inches high by 4 inches wide.

Excellent advice, if your rope gets tangled around your dock as the PWC starts pulling....

Would that damage the PWC?

Well, if your dock is real big it just might....

If your dock is big enough to damage a PWC (impeller or the like), you are probably a very well-paid movie star. The rope would likely just slip off mine.

Forget the skiing and just stay home and pull your dock insted.

One of my skis is a 92 Sea Doo GTX probably running around 65-85 hp. Never had a problem skiing with 2 ski's and I weigh around 185-195, depending on how much beer I have consumed. Most of it depends on the hull design and quality of skier. Most good experienced skiers on 2 skis will be on top of water before boat is going good. Good Luck!

I had the same problem with skis or towables behind my 97 GS...I had the wear ring replaced this year and now it pulls both great.
