My wife and I have an 18 foot Larson that we enjoy crusing the lake on. She loves to stop and look at houses, yards, etc. My question is would the installation of a hyrofoil help keep the boat on plane at low to moderate speeds. The boat is powered by a 3.0 ltr. Mercruser.

Hydrofoils are a bit different than what I think you are referring to - think "Thunderball". Trim tabs would certainly do what you are seeking, and allow you to compensate for out of balance loads, but are not inexpensive. Are you thinking about the foil/wing that goes on the outdrive and attaches to the cavitation plate?

The answer is " yes ". go with the " stingray original " sold by Overton's.com. Installs over cavitation plate of outdrive very easily, works like a dream. Had one on 18' bayliner with 140 johnson outboard and put one on a 19' Caravelle with a 4.3l v6. again, easy to install and it works. $ 49.00 - 59.00 plus shipping. You will notice a big difference when you shower down on the throttle also.

The fin in question will work to help the boat plane quicker, but with a price. They rob the boat of speed at higher speed. You also risk damaging the cavitation plate that the fin mounts to if you strike anything in the water. I have seen it happen many times. Sometimes the plate can be welded to repair, sometimes not, requiring the lower unit to be replaced. Go to IBOATS.COM and search the forums. You'll get the big picture.
Trim tabs are the real solution. It goes back to that old saying, pay now or pay later, but later always cost you more.
For those of you who aren't familiar with IBOATS.COM, you ought to check it out. A wealth of information at your fingertips with the capability of downloading factory manuals on just about every engine and outdrive made.

Thanks for the tip about IBOAT.COM. Checked it out and wealth of info. I still wouldn't hesitate putting a stingray on, but whatever anyone feels comfortable with. ? - Are the trims tabs adjustable- if so, manually or electric?

The Stinray is a device attached to the lower unit at the cavitation plate area and is solid (no adjustment feature) I guess I am just concerned about drilling holes in the lower unit plates and then finding out I don't like the results. As you can tell from my previous posts I am something of an anal retentive. To the extent that prior to buying a stainless steel prop, I refurbished my aluminum one each year. Go figure!

I would rather the prop ( aluminum ) break than the lower unit gears. Are the trim tabs adjustable? I have a pontoon boat now, so I won't be using either one, just curious.

I had a stingray on my Javelin 17' boat with a 115. I have not looked at the iboats page to see what concern they have; but I would highly recommend the stingray or similar equipment. I tried the new fancy stingray and did not like it as too much stayed in the water and slowed down top end, but the Stingray II worked great. Popped up on plane in no time, could go much slower on plane, and lost no top end speed as the foil is almost completely out of the water at full throttle. As for hitting something, if you hit that high on your motor, you have bigger issues than messing up the plate. I would be more concerned about hitting something with the trim tabs and ripping them out of the firberglass. Just my $0.02, which aint worht much these days.
