I found another source for lump charcoal if you live around Marietta..........Harry's Market carries a Mali's Gourmet lump charcoal in 10 lb bags for $4.99 a bag. Haven't tried any yet as I still have some of the BGE type..........but I've forgotten what that 20 lb bag cost, anyone remember? This sounds much less expensive.

I have bought lump charcoal from the Foodline in Dadeville and it really works well in my smoker. Burns slow and hot. I can hold 225 degrees while smokin' those butts. BTW, if you live in Gwinnett county in GA, there's a store, Quality Foods, in Buford that has Boston Butts on sale for 99 cents a pound. I'm going to buy at least three for the 4th weekend. If you see smoke on the Sandy Creek, stop in and have a cool one with me while I do the butts.

I haven't tried it, but Mali's Gourmet has a very good rating (see link)...It was one I was hoping I could find when I was researching brands. Harry's usually has good stuff, and I wish we had one close. Publix has their GreenWise brand for $5.49 (8.8 pounds) and I thought I'd give that a try; it has a similar rating I have a Publix close by. BGE is about $23 for 20 pounds. Let us know how you like the Mali's.

wished I lived up that way, I'd stock up for the Holidays......BTW......I do go up that way ocassionally to get my hair cut at the Little Mill Haircuts which is run by Billy and Debbie Varner. Funny thing, Billy is originally from Reeltown which is down the road a bit on Hwy 49! Are you familiar with his shop at 5751 Little Mill Rd outside of Buford?

I was just reading about lump charcoal on the naked whiz site and discovered Big Green Egg charcoal is made by Royal Oak.....

In exploring the ratings, I found the same thing about BGE charcoal. I then read the review and rating on Royal Oak and the rating was higher as long as it is the North American product. The Walmart in Wetumpka carries it in 10# bags for 6.97 a bag. I am going to pick some up and do some ribs this Friday night and will let you know how it burns.

Rude....I'm going to be in Buford today on business. If time permits, I'll swing by the shop and say hello to Billy. Does he know you by your forum handle? BTW, I'm going to stop at Quality Foods in Buford and pick up a couple of butts @.99/# and some whole split fryers for .89/#. Bring on the 4th!!!! We'll be smokin' on the Sandy Creek.

You've got an email...........they may know me as rude......but not as an alias!!......if you keep talking 'bout that smoking I might have to visit other friends in the Sandy Creek area land side and accidently find your place!

I have had my BGE for a long time. I never bought anything except BGE charcoal. I was bored one day and was reading the royal oak bag in the lowes and it's printed right there on the bag, "made in roswell, ga".(the same as BGE charcoal) I haven't bought BGE charcoil in about a year now. It is the exact same thing and will vouch for it.

Just bought a bag of Royal Oak and another bag of Kingsford "Competition" to comparison test this weekend. RO says "100% Hardwood", while Kingsford says "100% Natural". Sounds like a copout by Kingsford that it is using fillers, where RO is not. But, the RO bag states that regular briquettes maintain heat better for extended cooking times.
Question is, will the RO do a better good job for several hours of smoking low?? Better than standard Kingsford, or equal to BGE?

I've never tried the Kingsford brand to be honest with you. The royal oak to me is the same comparison to the BGE coal. The price is why I've been buying it. Ive never had a problem with losing heat. I do my butts for 15 hours and never have lost the flame. But then again thats just my opinion. Also, I am going on now to find the link but you need to read up on how they make the lump coal and yes it is 100% hardwood and the process is pretty cool. I'll work on that link and let me know how this weekend goes. If it's a flop, come on down to menoy creek. Pretty sure you can find us from there. Just follow your nose.

Probably need an Air Quality Alert this weekend due to about 10,000 grills firing up, mine included.
My brother-in-law is bringing 2 butts and a big brisket to smoke Friday night, about 15-18 hours total. Thus, all the questions about charcoal holding up. We'll see??

You're right about the charcoal. My good buddy JD Shellnutt was cooking in a competition for the local sherrif's dept and brought that up.
