I have a 26 ft Cruisers, cabin cruiser, 1989 year, with twin merc's (6 cyl) I/O. The out drives are gone. The originals were Alpha I, can older or newer drives be used to replace the old ones. (like Beta's or Alpha II's) Are the mounting holes the same and hook up to the egines the same. The original props spin in oppsite direction also. Does it matter if I have to mix and match to put it back together. I found some used pre-alpha's that still have the engines attached to them. What do ya think?

Look up SEI Outdrives. Brand new drives are around 1400. They are an exact duplicate of the Merc outdrives at a fraction of the price. Go to IBOATS.com and do a search on them. I have not seen a single complaint from anybody that has installed them. You can replace the whole outdrive with a new one for less than it would cost to repair the lower unit. Go ahead and figure in replacing the gimbal bearings, hoses, drive bellows and if it were me, the lower shift cables if they have not been replaced in the last 5 years. Hope this helped.

I didn't answer your questions though, Alpha 1's, Gen 1, can only be replaced with the same. Bolt patterns are different for all others. Also with dual drives, one is probably counter rotating so keep that in mind as well.

Make sure your engines are NOT counter rotating before you order drives, etc. I suggest you call someone that can gather enough info so that you don't end up with a larger project than you started with. We us SEI from time to time! They are a pretty good resource, but you MUST have proper information before you hit the "Order" button. My .02 worth. If you are not familiar with what you have, call someone that can provide good info.
