Bought 4 different brands of Lump Charcoal to compare with standard Kingsford off-the-shelf. And, tried one this weekend on steak. It was Royal Oak.
Ready to cook from Chimney in about 12 minutes. Easy.
Cooked 4 huge steaks over a THIN covering of coals that were very hot. High heat lasted about 2 hours after steak was removed. No taste/little ash.
Goodbye Kingsford.

Until I find something better, Royal Oak seems like the way to go....BGE coal at a wally world price. I also tried Cowboy's this week; OK, but not as good as R.O.

Cooked with Fresh Market (Cowboy) on Thursday and Friday, good heat but created a lot of ash. Cooked the prime rib loin on Saturday with Royal Oak ($6.37 at Walmart) and it held the heat and created very little ash. I will also stick with the Royal Oak.

Nature's (Something)?? from Winn-Dixie at about $7 for 8 pounds.
After that, on to Publix GreenWise at about $8 for 9 pounds.
We'll see.

Sorry I'm late jumping in on this one.

I have tried several types of natural lump also but not all of them (yet). I haven't found any that burn as hot or as long as BGE charcoal. Even Royal Oak states they get theirs from the same place as BGE but it wasn't nearly as good as BGE.

I get BGE charcoal for $9.00 / 20 lb bag at the Eggtoberfest. I normally buy 10 bags and that lasts me most of a year.

Just for your information check out this site on the different brands and comparisons:
