Got a weak stripe report on my web site if anybody's interested. Too hot to fish.

My fishing buddy at Smith Lake caught a 40 pounder right at the Smith Lake Dam intake. Fish was 46" long with 27" girth. Fished black salties at 30 feet. He caught it at 11:30 pm on the 4th.

Can someone educate me a little about the Black Salties. What is the difference between them and the shad in Lake Martin? Are they legal to fish with in Lake Martin? I ask that question because I have read they are not legal in some states/lakes because they were not native to that area....Thanks

They are not native to Lake Martin. They are basically a goldfish. They live forever on a hook. They can tolerate extreme hot or cold water. There is a debate on which is better for live bait, shad or salties. I have had great success with them on Smith Lake. I believe shad are a better bait but they are so delicate, hard to get, and expensive that salties are a great option for live bait.

We may not have caught a lot of fish, but we had a great time on the trip Wes! Haven't seen that many fish on the finder in a very long time... if only they'd bite! Thanks for a great day last weekend and thanks for showing us the ropes! We enjoyed the outing greatly!!
