What would it take to have a BBQ competition in Alex City? Anyone have any insiders on the C.O.C.?

War Eggle...that's good. I would think you need a benefit... money to go to some local charity. They could probably help you from there. I suppose you have a good recipe? ;-)

WarEagle...to have a full blown BBQ competition, you need to look at having it in 2010. That is if you want to use one of the sanctioning bodies to conduct the contest. There use to be a really good contest up in Sylacauga that was sponsered by the Sylacauga C.O.C. I judged (Memphis-In-May) there several years and it was right next to the Blue Bell ice cream plant. However, the city used that land to build a new police station and the contest could not find land suitable for the event. The two sanctioning bodies I judged for were MIM and Kansas City. If you're serious about putting a contest together, I will help you in any way I can.

I got it...I got it...have a Bar-B-Que Run...just like the Poker Run...
RULES:

*contestants are the BGE, gas, and reg. charcoal grill cooks to be chosen here at this grilling forum.

*sell tickets for $10 to be defray cost of meat, supplies...or donate to Children's Harbor or other charity.

*all contestants cook at their own house...kinda hard to move a BGE..or most other grills.

*lucky ticket holders zoom from location to location starting at 10 am on a Saturday until 5 pm and eat like a hawg...all day long....

*judges such as volunteers already mentioned must sample all locations...then meet at 5:30 for one final beer and consolidating results.

*winners get something...maybe...self esteem?

BigFoot.....that's a great idea!!!! I for one could set the ole smoker up next to my dock with a couple of tables set up in the shade with a cooler full of adult beverages, diet and regular coke and water. I can have my butts ready to sample by 10:00am. How many stops do we need to have in this contest? When we have a poker run on motorcycles, we have as many as 7 stops. Let me know when YOU get this put together.

If you guys are serious, here is who you need to contact as he is a Kansas City BBQ Sanctioned Judge and also a BBQ Competitor as I had thought the same thing a while back, putting such on to support local charities, but could never get enough interest form the HOBO organization to support such.

He is definitely the man and also a very nice person who will answer any questions you might have as he helps coordinate national events for Kansas City Barbecue Society.

Also you can Google Troy Black BBQ and find out a lot of info about him.

How many people do you think we could bring to this? If we pull an organization to take part in profits, we would need to know about how many people would want to do it. We have only had like 5 hits on this post about people who are interested.

how about the first trial run,,, No formal organizations yet.
get maybe 6/7 cookers.
Smoke/grill at their home location.
Sell $10 tickets per person to shuttle between the 6 places by water.
Just like BF's PokerRun idea, but small time as a test?
Who knows? Might explode. With beer and BBQ, the ingredients are there.

Sounds like a great idea. My BGE is in Orange Beach. All I have at the lake is a POS Jenn Aire Stainless gas grill that I can't even cook good hamburgers on. I guess I might have to get another BGE for the lake.

Bet on being scattered out. But, with 6/7 cook locations, there should be at least several within easy distance for those wishing to take the taste test and meet each other. I'm on PC and have not been past the Rock in 10 years, but for this, I think I would.

I'm in the Sandy Creek area and I'm a smokin' if someone puts this PigButt Run on. The only problem I see is that the cooks will not get to try the other cooks Que.

To provide shuttle service the butts will still be hot by the time arrive, if you place them on the manifold.

How about this?
1. Butt/Rib/Brisket RUN from say 10:00AM to about 4:00PM. (Judges must make ALL Stops)
2. X dollars per plate/taster/eater/observer, whatever.
3. Select a central spot on the lake to meet at 6:00/7:00PM (Sinclair's/ whatever/a bar) Time to shut down the smoker/get a shower/kiss the chef/change underwear/ You know??
4. Motor/sail/drive to the central spot for festivities starting at about 7:00PM?
5. Award Booby Prizes for categories/recognize Forum for what it means to us/meet others.
6. Name Tags?- Yep/Yep. Partipants will be interested to see a "Big Foot", or a "hodja", or a "DJ/FIB/LTL/???)

See how a "Trial Run" goes. Regardless, it will be fun for those who participate.
Needs more details, but keep talking. It's gonna'happen.

Ok to make it a LAKE MARTIN EVENT you have to cover us folks at the North End of the lake like a Poker Run as us rednecks at this end will KICK YOUR BUTTS - LOL !!!! No if ands or BUTTS about it !!!

One of our agents does competitive BBQ. We've talked about hosting one and donate to charity. I'm sure there are quite a few who would be interested.
I really like BigFoots idea. Sell run tickets but let them vote ala Top Chief! Ticker holder account for 50% of vote tally, and a select group of judges get 50%.
I'm all in this. Great idea!
Meeting at th end of the day would be icing on the cake. Bling it on. Even if we go small this year, with good planning it could well become something very special.

We just gotta make this happen. I ain't been so excited about an idea in a long time. I really see this taking off.
Have both awards. A Peoples Award. and the Judges Award. Lots of charities to pick from. Girls Ranch, Camp Civitan, MD (I believe they would assist in advertising), Children's Harbor are a few that come to mind.

I could easily setup a site w/maps etc for the event. I strongly suspect unless otherwise too busy, so would Bruce.

Heck rude, I will just cook my Pork just like the hot dogs in a big ole kettle of water and just add some liquid smoke for flavor - LOL.

However, I do have a homemade BBQ sauce to die for, I concocted years ago.

And lets just say you will find no better, at least that is what others have said.

Hey Rude, have a batter idea lets just go to Wallace's and pick up a butt and gravy and I will guarantee you we will win - LOL.

Oh yea, I am making it this weekend for the pork Butt I am smoking overnight on Friday for Aquapalooza. Have not made it probably in 20 years, so I have try it again to ensure it is still SO GOOD, heck might have been drunk the last time I made it 20 years ago!!!
