Subject:   An unbelievable fish story...
Date:   7/19/2009 2:37:11 PM

My buddy and I were bottom fishing from his boat using worms as bait. I made a cast that landed about 12 feet from shore. After about 6 or 7 seconds, there was a couple of quick jerks upon the line indicating that something had the bait in his mouth. I set the hook and tried to reel in my game. The line became entangled and I could not reel it in more than a foot or so. Since it was close to shore, my buddy decided he would jump in the water and swim under to untangle the line. He jumped in and submerged below the surface and stayed for about 25 seconds or so. He soon reappeared near the boat and climbed in. I asked why he did not untangle the line. His reply was, “You are not going to believe this but the line had gone inside a 55 gallon drum through the screw cap hole in the top, and the fish was inside the drum.” As we were ponder how we might retrieve the fish from inside the barrel, we notices a man on a tractor on the shore plowing a little spot of land. We paddled to the bank and related the story to the farmer who said that there were several drums that were out there from an old raft. He then suggested that if we could secure a chain that he had from his toolbox, to the drum and fasten the other end to the tractor, he would gladly pull it out of the water so that we could bust the top off and capture the fish. My friend agreed to do this and after about 20 minutes of so the drum was pulled from the water on the bank. It was rusty enough to be opened with a crow bar and a hammer which he (the farmer) also had. Imagine our surprise when we discovered a 14 pound bass that had been in the drum for an obvious long time. It was huge. We almost had it mounted.

Well, that thar ain't noting.
Years ago we'd had a long, hard drought. River kept getting smaller n smaller, finally all but totally dried up. Tell ya, got so bad pappy had me take some water down to the river bed and give the fish a spoonful of water just to keep em alive. Fishing wern't no fun. Just cast something wet in front of one of them fish, and they'd make a beeline right to it, stirring up dust all the way. Yep, sure was dry back then.

I remember that bad year. But I also remember the good one plenty of rain on the crops. In fact it was so good the sweet potatos grew so large that they grew from one side of the river to the next. We had a heck of a time trying to keep the hogs from rooting all the way from one side to the other side of the river. Water melons were so large that they had to be sent to market on a railway flat car. You could put only one cabbage head on the back of a pickup truck, and the leaves would fall off the sides and get under the tires.

I was striper fishing and had just connected with a 55 pounder.. Had the fish almost in the boat, when I saw her struggling in the water, her canoe had capsized.. Needed help, silly girl did not have a life vest.. so I netted the fish, and asked if I could assist.. She said 'well yaa!!' I threw a 9" Zara Spook, caught her swim suit, pulled her to the boat and she climbed in.. We went back to the beach and she fileted the fish (that's the fairy tell part of the story).. We have lived happily ever after..
