I have an old Mariner 90 with a top RPM of 5000. For best fuel economy what should be a good RPM for cruising?

I do not claim to be an expert in this area but I will be glad to give you my thoughts. You do not state the type or size boat you have. That would be very helpful. If you have a planing boat, I would run just above planing speed. If you have a non-planing boat I would find the recommended RPM from the manufacturer to deliver the most power with less fuel. My houseboat I/O motor has the most torque at about 2200 RPM and that is where I keep it most of the time going about 7 MPH.

6,800 RPM nets 142mph with fuel burn at 65 gallons per engine (2x)equals 1.10 mpg. :0 (BUT it only takes an hour to go 142 miles) Seriously, if I were to guess I would say cruise at the speed the boat feels the "freeiest" and there is a noteable quiteness/lack of strain (according to sound) on the engine. I have been thinking about this for a couple of days now, and that is the only answer I can come up with. Would also need to trim the motor accordingly. my .02 worth.

Thanks CAT, it's an old pontoon. Trim doesn't work. So I guess I just have to experiment and see. I have been running about 3500.

On a new Honda 90, the max hp rating is at 5,800 RPM. The recommended RPM for cruising is 2,500-4,000. Since 5,000 is your max it appears 3,500 is at the high end. I would try around 3,000 since it is an older engine.
