The mechanical fuel pump on my 1993 Volvo (GM) 5.0L is out. Can I replace it with a regular GM 5.0L and adapt the fuel lines or do I have to pay the extra $100 for a Volvo Penta?

You could replace it with a automotive pump. I am reasonably sure that your pump would be of the marine variety so that when/if it fails it will not spill fuel into the bilge of the boat. Most of the marine pumps have a clear tube running from the up to the flame arrester to keep that from happening. If it were me, I would replace it with exactly what came from factory. That way there would be less of a fire hazard. My .02 worth.

No, you must replace the pump with a marine pump.The marine pumps are designed so if they fail, it does not leak gas into the bilge, like automotive pumps will. You really don't want to risk the lives of your family and friends over $100? Check prices at Iboats.com.

Bama,
I ordered the marine pump. I guess I didn't make my last reply clear. I think $100 is cheap insurance and would never put friends, family or dock mates in jeopardy just to save a few bucks. This is in a houseboat so the potential for loss is HUGE, especially when we have 10 or more tied together on the weekends. Thanks for all the input. It made the decision a no-brainer!
