If I could offer another suggestion, consider one of the large Solo Stoves or similar for better cost and utility. Especially for those who said they are considering a fire pit.

We built a terrific fire pit at a previous house as part of patio project. As nice as it was to look at, it didn't get used as much as we thought for a few reasons. First was spark containment which was a real challenge, most of those domed screens simple melted with any amount of heat. Finally found one that didn't but it was SUPER pricey. Second was being able to safely walk away from the fire at end of evening without concerns for burning down neighborhood. Shockingly money can solve that problem as well with a hinged steel cover the same size as pit opening that could be put in place as needed. This also helped keep rain out if a shower came prior to cleaing out pit and making a ash-soup mess.

Last, which there is no solution for, was the experience we've all had around campfires; no matter where you go around the entire circle THERE is where the smoke will be in your eyes. Yeah, it's part of the ambience but not pleasant for everyone.

I was very skeptical of these Solo Stoves, but a couple of the folks I work for had them and swore they worked exactly as promoted. Broke down and got one and damn if they don't! They are easy to light and get hot and, once fully fired up, the smoke and sparks really are 95% self contained due to the unique design of the lip and hollow barrel wall. It's remarkable, and we have been using the HECK out of this the past few years. They make a vinyl cover so you can leave it out once cooled and they also recently started offering a stainless lid for each size so as the fire winds down you can cover it up and safely walk away.

Best of all you can move it out of the way in warmer weather and have the full patio space.

For those building a full fireplace this may not substitute, but everyone I know who's had one either with original purchase or add on uses it way less than they ever thought and of course the cost is signifcant.

No financial interest in the firm other than what I've spent there. Getting a second one for cabin this spring. Give them a look, talk to others who have one.
