All "open water" buoys on the lake, and there are a lot of them, are placed and maintained by hard working volunteers, not the Marine Police or any other State agency. These volunteers work with the Marine Police to help identify certain hazards on the lake, GPS them, and then use their own equipment (boats, tools, etc.) and time to make the necessary installations or repairs. The funds for the buoys are generated by the Lake Martin Resource Association, founded by Ben Russell (866/329-0835). If you happen to see these volunteers out working, offer them a kind word, as they are trying to make our Lake safer for everyone. We would also appreciate your boating courtesy while we are working....rough wakes and "fly-bys" sure make the job more difficult. Finally, let others know that the buoys were not a "gift" from the State and do not simply "come with the Lake", and maybe more people will understand what it takes to make Lake Martin the treasure that it is.
