A recent article in the Birminham News talks about ALPCo generating a record 11,994 megawatts of power on Monday, August 6/07. That's enough power for 3 million homes.
The article further states that ALPCo has had no problems generating "the juice" needed to keep the A/C systems running. There is plenty of capacity at the 24 sites and plenty of coal, gas, and nuclear fuel to run these plant. Hydroelectric power from dams is low due to draught.
I suspect that the Gargis plant is running wide open and using the cooler waters from Smith Lake to meet their discharge specs. Water levels on 8/8/07 were at 499.4 feet, down from 500.2 feet on 8/6/07 - a change of 0.8 feet. Folks, this is a lot of change in water level in two days. How low will AlPCo move Smith lake before September 15 based on current movements?
Our family has basically taken the position that aquatic activities on Smith Lake for 2007 are basically over due to potentials for injuries and equipment damages to jet skis and ski boats.. 494 feet or lower - will the level be here within the next 2 weeks? Citizens will react to low water levels only when a grandchild has been seriously injured or killed from hitting a tree stump partially submerged. I pray that noone ever has to be faced with this tragedy.
My neighbor's dock, hydro lift, and jet ski ports are on dry ground. I suspect that this is not a strange situation at many other sites on Smith Lake. This same thing also happened last year but at a later date. Why would anyone want to come to Smith lake, invest many thousands of dollars, and face water levels changes of this type that are totally unnecessary?
