The total issue to me is that the lake initially was permitted by the government to generate electricity via the turbines from the dam. It appears that the use of the lake at the present time is not for electricitty via hydrogeneration only but to use as a water cooling source for downstream facilities (fossil fired plants!!!). No one would hear the first comment from me and others if this was the situation that was impacting water level control on Snmith Lake. I understand droughts and their impacts.

I also believe that a majority of the property owners and Alabama Power also would agree that this lake is multi usage intended (recreation, power generation, environmental, etc.). When water levels could be better managed via capital expenditures for cooling towers, etc., I believe that corporate America should proceed in this direction. Profits are not the only criteria listed in the permit application. Alabama Power would not hesitate to expend capital funds to alleviate an environmental issue that was being created by their management practices. Citizens in this area would be totally intolerant of a refusal to correct a major health, safety, or environmental problem.

I also appreciate the fact that Alabama Power does provide a venue for citizens of the Smith Lake area to express their opinion via this web site.
