There is certainly a lot of chatter amongst the intelligensia that Putin is desperate enough to use tactical nukes in Ukraine.  That could be a bit of a problem.  While I think it would be crazy for us to respond with nukes I suspect we would have to respond with some serious conventional means which could indeed start WW3....the world against Russia, Crimea and probably China and North Korea.  I say the latter because I suspect if there is a broader conflict with Russia China will use that as an excuse to go after Tawain and the Norks after South Korea.
