I completely agree about the college education.  Average college educated person makes $1M more in lifetime compensation than those that don't.  I always point out the guys/gals holding the Jiffy Lube or Quizno signs and tell my kids, don't go to college and you too can have a fine job like that.  Its not that someone doesn't need to do those jobs but you want your kids to aspire to more.

Having said that, there is a move afoot that I support that suggests that if you can pass the CPA exam or some other exam why do you need to go to college to be an accountant, etc?  For those of us that went to college we recognize that a significant portion of that education is relatively meaningless to what we do every day.  Obviously for some specialties (i.e., engineering, science, doctors, lawyers, etc.) there is no other option but for a lot of professions it is simply a right of passage instead of being really meaningful.

I also think the four year program at most colleges represents the fair employment act for college employees versus being really necessary.  My son is pursuing a BSc in Recording Arts at Full Sail University in Orlando and it is a 24 month program straight through (no summer breaks, classes six days per week).  He has two classes for a month (3 days each with 4 hours of class and 4 hours of lab) and then onto the next subject.  Their tag line is Real World Education.  He loves it and will be done a full two years before any of his classmates and will be in the work world at age 20 with a BSc.  Now if he can only get a job and get off the gravy train.....
