I think we will get to know her better over the next 2 months but frankly very few people pick the President because of the VP nod. The rule is usually "do no harm". In this case, McCain was having trouble connecting with the base in the party. Like it or not the pick up to now has been prescient. Suddenly we have Obama and Biden apparently running against the VP which diminishes them. I think that McCain also recognized that the liberal media and netroots can't help themselves and would go on the attack. This only makes Palin more sympathetic to women voters who did not like the way Hillary was supposedly treated.

We will know on November 4th whether this was a good pick but as of today it has worked well for McCain. If she holds her own with Biden in the debate and doesn't make a gaffe on the stump or in media interviews she will most likely be a net positive for what looked like a losing effort. There have been few times when a VP pick actually made a difference (last one was probably LBJ who carried Texas and Alabama for for JFK).

I would say that I am mildly optimistic that she will do fine but if not, then we can read all the tell-all books about what a buffoon McCain was for picking an unknown Governor from Alaska. If they win, he's brilliant and Obama will be eaten alive for picking Biden. Gotta love politics!
