Fewer Providers Prescribing Opioids, Study Finds. Reuters (3/13, Emery) reports a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that “the rate of first-time opioid prescriptions declined 54 percent between 2012 and 2017 in the U.S.,” primarily because many health care providers “stopped prescribing the painkillers.” Specifically, “the number of prescriptions for three days’ worth of an opioid...fell 57 percent” during that period, while “there was a 68 percent decline in the number of prescriptions offering seven days of opioid therapy.” TIME (3/13, Park) reports the study, which was based on “national claims data from Blue Cross-Blue Shield from more than 86 million people,” found the number of health care providers “prescribing opioids for the first time to patients or to people who had not had them prescribed in the last six months also declined, from 114,043 to 80,462.” Follow all of the ADA’s advocacy efforts, policies and positions on opioids at ADA.org/opioids. As a public service, the ADA Center for Professional Success website is now offering free access to information on safe prescribing, online continuing education, and other tools for managing dental pain, especially for patients who are at risk for drug overdose or addiction.
