I tend to agree that they seemed like totally different forums. One spurred what appeared to be a genuine, spontaneous show of affection for Bush in what appeared to be a less formal setting. The other showed what appeared to be a more formal setting although it looked like the senior military officers were clapping and the enlisted men did not take the cue or were told not to clap or something.

Having said all that, I think there is no doubt that the jury is still out on Mr. Obama as far as his view of the military and that would certainly cause a more reserved reception.

On the note of respect for the President, I think you have to go back into our long history and you will see a lack of respect for certain occupants of that office that would make us cringe today. Some of the political cartoons and posters about Abe Lincoln makes today's conduct mild by comparison. Politics is an ugly business and after 8 years of hearing the left say the most vile things about Bush, we have become somewhat desensitized to it.
