Doesn't surprise me at all. It seems to me that in 8th grade or so, in social studies we studied each of the main world religions, just in terms of what they believe and who they worship and that was in public school. I don't know why they would single out Islam for study, because there are an equal number of Buddists, Jews, Taoists, etc.
