You are right, the once proud and relatively conservative GOP under Reagan leadership has morphed into the DC Uniparty.  The struggle that you describe is much needed and will occur prior to 2022 under Trump leadership, as long as Trump reigns in his often times obstructive ego and learns to work smartly with both factions in the party.  He continues to live rent free in your head Archie and his lot size is ever expanding.
