Any ( boating ) water fatality is always sad and is directly caused by the driver / operator of the vessel involved. Whither it is their lack of common sense or their lack of ability to control their onboard guest. As in the Georgia case : 13 people on a 22’ pontoon : 10:30 pm : 2 children killed no lifejackets on – Can we say life jacket count please !!! Renting a Boat / PWC on Lake Martin requires “ NO ” boating license or ability questioned if you are from out of state. ( Please correct me as this is what I understand by law ). And now these same people are wanting to rent fast ski boats on Lake Martin ??? Holly Chit !!!!!

I have friends whom have house boats on Lake Altoona and Lake Lanier who I chat with regularly and ask me to visit quite often. I have been out a few times, but never again !! Now I only go up to visit when they are moored in their wet slip. Way to scary to be on that water with those idiots lacking common sense and disrespect for their fellow boater’s. 17 – 20 water deaths in 2011 and 5 - 6 water deaths so far in 2012 have many Lake Lanier residents seeking tougher water laws. No boating school or licenses are required even for a 120’ house boat or 45' Sea Ray.

My take on Lake Martin ( my home ). Will Lake Martin ever become another Lake Lanier –NO. We already have boat restrictions and we are very limited on rental housing for visitors. Our problem on beautiful Lake Martin is “ US “. A boating license is just a piece of paper without personal merit for safety and common boating respect. Although required on Alabama waters, a piece of paper does not limit stupidity and there is much of this to show on Lake Martin already.

I am just an old pontoon guy who drives slow enjoying the beauty of the lake like many on this forum. I would chuckle more often seeing a “ Lot More “ of these boat operators ( and yes - PWC's – please, please ) being given oral safety instructions with the “ Blue Lites “ flashing. A few more tickets given would take away from their fuel allowance. Personal contact with these type boaters is not advised as all you will get from the true idiot’s is the “ one finger salute “. Capt Brooks does a great job with the limited budget for Lake Martin. Maybe it is time for the Tri-County Sheriff’s office to become more involved with patrolling Lake Martin. This combined effort of resources has much success with many other lake communities around the U.S. . It is past time for “US” on Lake Martin to unite for a safer water community. Our Marine Police must become more aggressive with these unsafe boaters to make Lake Martin safer. How many lives must be lost before changes occurs? I am just speaking the truth and calling it self responceability.

I do not have all the answers; however it’s inevitable our water fatality numbers will grow quickly if we continue as witnessed this past week ( July 4th ). Now – that will be truly sad and scary for our lake community.

Respectfully,
