Your mention of no "tradesmen" made me think of an interesting story I heard the other day. A doctor had a stopped up drain line and called a plumber for help. The doctor followed the plumber down to the basement where there was a curve in the pipe before it emptied into the sewer. The plumber took his hammer and 'whacked" the pipe and a "gurgle" was heard and the drain was cleared. The doctor asked the plumber how much he owed for his services. The plumber said $100.00. The homeowner said I am a doctor and I don't make that kind of money for five minutes of work. The plumber said, "I didn't either when I was a doctor".
