Alabama Alert

March 9, 2006

Lake Boating May be Restricted in Alabama

Background:
There are two bills currently proposed before the Alabama legislature that may have an effect on the future of your boating on lakes in the state.

SB 487 and HB 756 are currently identical bills. They "prohibit the use of residence boats, recreational vessels longer than 30'6", or recreational vessels with engines in excess of 500 HP in … Lake Harris, Jordan Lake, Lay Lake, Logan Martin Lake, Martin Lake, Mitchell Lake, Neely Henry Lake, Smith Lake, and Weiss Lake."

Senate Bill 487, sponsored by Senator Dial, was heard before the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday March 8, and passed out of committee 10-0. It is now headed to the full Senate for a vote, as early as Tuesday March 14. (This means it is especially important for you to contact your Senator NOW!)

House Bill 756, sponsored by Representative Laird, has been sent to the Agriculture and Forestry Committee, and has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.

Action Needed:
1. Local lawmakers need to hear from their constituents. Please contact your representatives and let them know how you feel about this bill.

2. To find out who your State Senator is, use this link and type in your zip code: http://www.legislature.state.al.us/senate/senate.html
