I don't know about us Marines taking the .50 off the 106, but it probably happened.

The .50 worked really well as a sniper rifle. We left it mounted on the major caliber, and used the 106 E&T mechanism. A good gunner could flick ashes at 2000 meters. We would use one of those little smoke rounds to get the wily Cong or NVA moving. Then after having a little fun with them, we would finish them off with ball ammo. You could save the expensive big round, and the big noise, by doing it that way. This worked especially well if you were on a relatively high OP.

I will give the 106 some credit in destroying my hearing, BTW.
