Looking at the hard research, here’s what you find. The Centers for Disease Control, US Dept of Public Health released data in June 2016 that stated the following:
There are an average of 2200 deaths per year in the US due to Alcohol overdoses, 2010-1012.
There were an average of 88,000 deaths per year from 20016-2010 due to alcohol related conditions.
At the same time, research has extensively reviewed cause-of-death data from across the US and there has not been a single case of a death due to overdose of marijuana. Ever.

If you were looking to ban a drug because of its impact on public health, it would have to be alcohol, not marijuana.
