They wrote four of us up for diving more than 50 feet from our boat, which had a flag on it. They -followed our bubbles- banging on thier ladder trying to get us to surface. Followed us around for more than 30 minutes so that they could write the ticket. I was guilty as charged, paid the fine. Just pointing out that the MP involved was violating the 100 foot rule the entire time. By the way, although I was beyond the 50 foot rule, I was within 100 feet of my boat, and at 40 feet. I returned directtly to the point of origin without incident.
If you are curious enough, digest this. I can put a flag on my boat and be -legal-. All references on anchor rode suggest a 3 to 1 ratio. So, anchored at 60 feet my anchor will be +-180 feet from my flag. Anchored at 20 feet I would have 60 feet of rode. I would obviously follow my anchor line down to begin my dive. If I descended immediately below the boat, the wind could cause it to swing at least 50 feet from side to side. This would then put me into an illegal dive per the rule. So, I guess I should just drop multiple flags and create a grid so that I am covered? The reason I will not drag a flag anymore is two-fold. One reason is that I have had one snag on an object unseen somewhere above me (perhaps a tree limb?) and that flag has not been seen since. I have also heard stories about people grabbing the flags and driving off with them. I don't want a tug of war when my life is at stake.
So, I guess what I am saying is dive at your own risk, and to the risk of your pocket book because someone out there is ticket happy.
