Food stamps help nearly 1000 TN state employees

NASHVILLE (WTVF/CNN) - Nearly a thousand state workers in Tennessee rely on welfare to put food on their tables, allegedly because they don't make enough money to keep up with their cost of living.

Across the state, 964 state employees coming anywhere from district offices to the Tennessee Tower are on food stamps.

"I don't think Tennesseans are going to be proud of the fact that we are paying this large group, nearly a thousand people, not enough money to feed their families," said Robert O'Connell, a member of the State Employee Association.

The group fired off a letter to the Governor demanding the state pay more, saying part of the problem is that state salaries haven't kept up with the cost of living in Tennessee.

The agency that hands out food stamps, the Department of Human Services, has 228 employees in the system, the most out of any in the state. The Corrections Department is next with 191 employees on public aid, followed by the Department of Environment and Conservation, where 129 workers are on welfare.

"You won't have your pothole patched. You won't have the drunk driver stopped by the state highway patrolman, you won't have the DHS worker going out into the middle of the night and saving some child from a pre carious situation, you won't have the dedicated people in the positions that you need if you don't pay them enough," O'Connell said.

The State Employee Association believes there may be more state workers who qualify and need food stamps, but won't sign up because of the stigma of asking for government help.
