Hotel worker fired for showing patriotism

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (WJXT/CNN) – A Florida hotel worker was fired for wearing American flag pin.

Sean May says he stood up for what he believed in and lost his job. His manager told him to remove his lapel pin of the American flag because it violated dress code.

"I just felt, if they'd come to me with an option rather than an ultimatum we may have been a little bit more peaceful," May said.

May's former employer, the Casa Monica Hotel released a statement saying "The American flag greets every guest and employee with its symbolism of our belief in this great country. However, our employee handbook clearly states, ‘No other buttons, badges, pins or insignias of any kind are permitted to be worn.' They also state it is a standard regulation which ensures equality for all."

Bruce Whalen, a military veteran is offended by the hotel's policy and is writing the hotel and to his entire mailing list to boycott the hotel.

"In my opinion, the dress code should require they wear a pin with the American flag, and maybe send them home if they don't have it," Whalen said.

Another veteran, Don Williamson says personal patriotic pride does not just live in veterans. He believes everyone should have one and should take the same stand as May.

"This is the flag that our country is represented by, this is our national symbol," Williamson said. "I can't imagine it would offend enough people and I know it's down to where it upsets one person, they want to take it away for everybody and I don't think that's right, I really don't."
