There is plenty of skill that goes into trolling, especially when you don't have electronics to help you, and you are relying on knowledge and instinct. I troll specific areas that require precise positioning in order to catch fish. I won't waste my time and gas puttering through open water. I will target likely looking areas or submerged structure that I have discovered during low water times, and frequently experiment with speed and direction in order to find out what works. When you fish from a 14 foot jon boat with no fish finder and no electric trolling motor, parking on top of a main lake hump or long point and dragging a jig or Carolina rig is not an option. Trolling or drifting are the only ways I can fish the main lake without being blown off of the water or run down by the big dog boats.
