I tend to go with the basic concept that people are paid what someone thinks they are worth. The coaches are the ones that identify and recruit players to the school against some very stiff competition. The coaches are the ones that train them and give them the skills to perform at the highest levels. The coaches are the ones that review game films and develop the offensive and defensive schemes and calls the plays during the game.
So yes, I agree that the players are the ones on the field but everything that happens to get them to that point is on the shoulders of the coaches, especially the head coach. Saban gets that much from Alabama because of the revenue generated by the football program and the reality that there are tons of other Div I schools that would pay him that much to move there and make them $175M in revenue.
