There is a bit of confusion on HDTV and DTV. DTV is what the FCC is madating all terrestrial stations (WSFA, etc) install expensive transmitter and antennas to use. The programming will be delivered via a digital signal. As to what they do with the digital is up to the station.
They could offer a single HDTV path. Most won't but will give an "upgraded" version of what you're getting now in a widescreen format.
Full HDTV signals have been available on Direct Tv for quite a while. The main problem has been no programmers,save HBO and ESPN,who care much about jumping on the investment needed to give a HDTV signal since there are so few HDTV sets in use.
Personally, I don't care for the pixellating and other video artifacts left over in a digital signal, be it Direct TV or Dish. But is is the only alternative to being tied to a wire with even more poor service.
Many terrestrial digital TV signals are on with very low power since the stations don't want to pay the power bill for another big transmitter to put up a signal only a few viewers in a market could see.
