Sounds a lot like a true freak accident. Only advise would be to consider a plastic one (where rope loops over it) which probably wouldn't have sharp edges.

I am really happy to hear that your son, for the most part will be "alright". I can't imagine a young person receiving a 1000 stiches! Bless his heart! As I am an Eagle scout myself, I am excited to hear that his recent first aid training came in handy. I bet never in a million years did he ever think he would use it to save his own life.

All in all, I think you and your family handled this very well. An injury of this magnatude could have certainly had a different outcome if you all hadn't acted calm and quickly.
