Both Wind Creek and Elkcatchee Creek border the park on oppisite sides and may be what you are looking for and what you consider "close by".  Please be very careful always but especially if you venture across 'big water" on a Sat or Sun, but have the place pretty much to yourself on any weekday.  The head water of the lake is about 20 miles upstream from you at that point, that is nice ride, I don't know about paddling. IF this is your first trip, welcome, you are about to experience the best body of fresh water in the southeast. There is so much to see that most folks never come close to seeing it all with only one vacation.
