I avoid the malls and department stores like the plague but with real unemployment close to 20% I think the retailers are expecting a grim year. Been several articles in the WSJ lately to that effect. Their plan might be to keep inventories down to avoid the deep discounting they had to do last year to move inventory.

What will be interesting is if sales "exceed expert's expectations" (whoever they are) will the stock market go up? It always drives me crazy that we have to not only try to understand what is happening in the economy but also see what the so called experts or analysts are predicting. It is the height of absurdity when we lose 500,000 jobs but it's considered good news because experts expected 520,000. Or when sales are up 3% over last year but its bad news because experts projected sales would be up 3.5%. Not sure how I got on that topic but I got it off my chest....
