There's another reason for the Second Amendment that I believe is playing out right now.  The party in power is doing everything it can to completely control our lives.  A well armed militia, us, serves to keep that party from a total assault on our freedom.  They know that we are armed and that if they try to go as far as they would like, that those arms would be used to thwart their attempt to take over the country by force.  My (liberal) son was aghast when I suggested to him that if "they" were to come for my guns they would have to take them by force, even to the point of lethal force.  Maybe the "everyday liberal" doesn't see the threat. 

I have said before and will reiterate that I am far, far from being a gun nut, concealed carrying a .380 for purely defensive purposes and having other, more lethal arms in my gun safe that I dust off and take to the range every couple of years just to ensure I can still operate them.

I hate to say it, but based on things I have witnessed over the past six or eight years the party currently in power WOULD take advantage of a populace that was not so armed.  They are despicable and drunk on power.  We need to ensure there continues to be a counter force that can keep that seemingly insatiable thirst at bay.
