BP owns what was once called Sohio Petroleum.  Traded their interest in Prudhoe Bay for control of Sohio (the original Standard Oil Company based out of Cleveland, Ohio).  BP employs more Americans than Brits.  But why let facts get in the way of a good anti-business bashing that caters to the left wing nuts and provides a convenient crisis to enact crushing tax and cap legislation and illegal moratoriums that cost tens of thousands of jobs in the already suffering Gulf Coast.  But heck, none of them voted for the Messiah so screw em......

Full disclosure, my first job out of grad school was as an exploration geophysicist with Sohio in Dallas.  Worked with 600 others in Dallas but after Mukluk came up dry BP sent in their hatchet man as CEO of Sohio and by the end of two years they moved 30 people to Houston, LA and Anchorage and everyone else was gone including me.  I have no love for BP but they are more and American company than a British company.  And by the way, rather than whining about it I resolved to move on and make lemonade out of lemons.  Never took a penny of unemployment, just got back up and eventually found another job.  Was wise to put away some cash while I was working so I could weather the storm.
