The best bait is live shad. You will probably not find any bait stores that sell them around Lake Martin. They are just too hard to keep alive this time of year. Bream will work too. I fish Smith lake more for stripers and a popular bait up there is live goldfish. We caught a 40 pounder using live a goldfish on a planer board this past May. Bucktails are no good this time of year because the fish are holding so deep. You need a good fish finder to mark the stripers and bait. If you find schools of shad then the stripers will be there too. The fish should be holding in the 30 to 50 foot range. Like the previuos poster said, going with a guide is a good idea. I have been at least 10 times on Smith lake with a guide at different times of the year to learn his secrets.
