I'm skeptical. We live in a global environment and people travel. It's unreasonable to think that an outbreak of a serious illness anywhere in the world would not reach our shores. You recall, in the beginnng of SARS, no one was sure about it either. As it turned out, as you correctly point out, it mostly affected the elderly and children. We found a way to screen for it, and the Asian countries were instrumental in keeping it contained by doing the screening. We're not there yet on Ebola and I have my doubts about African countries being able to adequately screen for it, even if such a thing existed.
Speaking of Ebola - did you ever read the book "The Hot Zone"? True story about an Ebola break out years ago in suburban VA.
