I think people that focus on the device fall into two categories.  First and most generously are those that are genuinly distressed about these events that simply have no idea what to do but want to do something.  Even if this something will not work but they need to believe that they did something.....anything.

Second is the ideologically driven response.  These people for many reasons do not think Americans should have the right to own guns.  The cynical amongst us, which includes me, is that many of those people realize that the biggest impediment to complete control over the American people by the government is an armed populace.  The rest foolishly believe that fewer murders will take place with no guns in our society.  This is totally at odds with reality and experience but when you are ruled by emotion you can be irrational.

That they believe there will be fewer murders without law abiding citizens owning guns is literally the height of nonsense. What all of them have in common is an intense desire not to confront and tackle the real problem in our society that is driving these events.  The breakdown of the family, fatherless homes, divorce, reduced faith in God and his laws, etc.  Those are very challenging problems to try to resolve so they resort to meaningless gestures that make them feel better about themselves but actually do nothing.  Emotion over facts, logic and reason.
