I have a Garmin, but I only turn it on when I am out of cell range and therefore google maps on my iphone is useless. I find that using a combo of google maps, the garmin, and that physical map of the lake that C stores sell is the way to go. Below please see an article I wrote for Lake Mag, that might be helpful if you are scouting homes by boat.
