Probably should not be a total surprise as SCOTUS saw this as a bad precedent and a clear violation of the Constitution.  I suspect the liberal wing of the court realized if they let this stand it would be a signal for red states to take similar action against a Democrat nominee.  Next ruling that will be big is whether states can use lawfare against a President to hamper their ability to govern.  That one will be 5-4 one way or the other.  The Constitution clearly states that impeachment is the process.  If they allow this to go forward then it will eventually be applied to a sitting President, count on it.
