My deck surface is about 4 inches over full pool. I think that is ideal except on the one day a year the lake actually hits full pool. In the past that has been Memorial Day weekend and the boat waves rifle through the openings in the planks. Not toot big of deal and I like being closer to the water instead of a foot or two gap.

One thing to consider is that the beams can prevent the flow of water around and under the deck at higher lake levels. Pollen and debris tend to gather in the spot where my dock connects to the seawall when the lake levels are 389.6 or higher since the beams are actually in the water and the surface water can't pass under.
